The Plum Blossoms a Second Time

Middle lot

When winter comes, one plum branch stands on the ridge.

Leaves fall and branches dry, yet it is not destroyed.

If warm spring arrives quietly and quickly,

it returns me again as the foremost flower.

Original text

Original Chinese verse

依然还我作花魁

但得阳春悄急至

叶落枝枯终不摧

冬来岭上一枝梅

When plum blossoms opened, Chen honored his dead friend and prayed that Mei's descendant would rise. A storm knocked the blossoms down, but after prayer the plum trees bloomed again. Mei Liangyu later achieved first place in the examinations and married Chen Xingyuan.
