Wang Mang Seeks Worthy Men

Middle lot

If you raise bees, you seek their honey,

but fear the sting at the tail.

There may be another path before your eyes,

yet in the dark it is deep like a thorn forest.

Original text

Original Chinese verse

暗里深如荆棘林

须是眼前有异路

只怕遭触尾上针

养蜂须用求他蜜

Allusion

Wang Mang rose under the Han through his aunt, Empress Wang, and was known at first for humility, generosity, and attracting capable people. He later usurped the Han and founded the Xin dynasty. His archaizing reforms deepened public suffering, and Liu Xiu eventually overthrew him and restored the Han as the Eastern Han.
