Guan Yin Oracle No. 85

Han Wengong Meets Snow

Middle lot

Clouds open, yet mist covers the mountain road.

Within the circle of all things, the moon becomes full again.

If books and poems can wake the sunken dream,

a noble person leads you step by step to the heavenly terrace.

Original text

Original Chinese verse

云开雾罩山前路

万物圆中月再圆

若得诗书沉梦醒

贵人指引步天台

Allusion

Han Yu, posthumously Wengong, was a Tang scholar-official. After criticizing the emperor's reception of a Buddhist relic, he was demoted to Chaozhou. At Lan Pass, heavy snow blocked the road and his horse would not advance, fulfilling lines earlier spoken by his nephew Han Xiangzi. Han Yu then understood the warning; later stories say he gave away his wealth, entered the mountains, and cultivated the Way.

Translated verse

This lot shows flowers opening after spring seems finished. Matters change later.

Explanation

An older person may still seek. When spring has faded, flowers bloom again. If seeking fame and profit, late unexpected wealth can appear.

Reading the sign

The road ahead is covered, and after taking the next step you may regret that the previous step was not done well.

The colorful matter can flourish again if teachings wake your confusion and a noble person guides you onto a broad road.
