Liu Chen Meets the Immortals

Middle lot

You pierce the earth with an awl, seeking a spring.

The harder you force it, the harder it is to obtain.

Without intention, you suddenly meet a true companion.

Hand in hand, you rise together toward the blue sky.

Allusion

In the Eastern Han, Liu Chen and Ruan Zhao entered Tiantai Mountain to gather herbs and met two immortal women, whom they married. After half a year they returned home and discovered that seven generations had passed and more than a century was gone. No one knew them. They tried to return to the mountain, but could not find the old path. The story points to the strange grace of an unforced encounter.

Translated verse

This lot shows digging the earth for a spring. Matters are difficult first and easier later.

Explanation

For what the heart desires, the west may be sought. Yet it may be better not to force movement, because something can be planned where you stand.

Reading the sign

You may want results as soon as the work begins, but only steady and practical effort can make the result arrive sooner.

An unexpected meeting with a kindred person becomes the turning point. Working together can create a better outcome than forcing the matter alone.

By question

General Matters

Work diligently and practically, but do not force the fruit before its time. This lot also shows meeting a true companion in life, love, or business.

Love and Marriage

The harder you chase love, the less it comes. When you stop forcing it, the right person may appear by chance.

Someone you like may be a true companion, so you can try dating. If already together, do not rush marriage. Play your role well and let the timing mature.

If the relationship is broken, the more you try to pull it back, the less it returns. A relaxed response may invite the other person back. Yet a new companion may also appear unexpectedly.

Work, Job Search, and Business

A job may not appear when pursued too intensely, but can surface by chance. Career should be handled with an ordinary mind. In partnership, choose someone compatible, fair, and not selfish.

Exams, Competition, and Promotion

Practice normally and avoid overpressure. Too much attachment to winning can cause mistakes. For promotion, schemes may backfire, so wait quietly.

Investment and Money

Handle it lightly. Not clinging too hard can become the winning point.

Business Trade

Do not hold customers too tightly or fear every loss. A calm attitude helps business.

Property

The more you insist on closing the deal, the more damage may arise. Treat it lightly and the deal may happen.

Health

Overtreatment may worsen matters. Relax, stay open, and avoid turning small worries into wrong treatment.

Change and Transfer

The more you seek change, the worse it may become. The present change is unnecessary.

Pregnancy and Children

Anxious methods may backfire. Live normally, relax, and the desired child may come naturally.

Legal Matters

Settlement benefits both sides. Trying to win alone may prolong the dispute.

Finding People or Things

When sought deliberately, it is not seen. When not forced, it appears.

Travel and Going Abroad

Overeagerness brings the opposite effect. Developing where you stand saves money and strength.
