Sun Bin Traps Pang Juan

Lot 65Lower lotMao Palace

Cutting flesh to patch a sore still wounds you. Taking from the east to patch the west still leaks. If you try to hurt others, you also hurt yourself; knowing when to stop brings relief.

Original text

Original Chinese verse

不如守旧待时光

割肉补疮为甚事

亦不危时亦不安

眼前欢喜未为欢

Allusion

Sun Bin and Pang Juan studied under Guiguzi. Pang Juan, jealous of Sun Bin's talent, tricked him and had his feet mutilated. Sun Bin escaped to Qi, became adviser to King Wei, and later used a strategy of reducing campfires to lure Pang Juan into an ambush at Maling. Knowing escape was impossible, Pang Juan killed himself.

Translated verse

This lot shows cutting flesh and making a wound. All matters should keep to the old and wait.

Explanation

When you know to stop, stop. When you know to be broad, be broad. Cutting your own flesh brings the same pain as illness.

Reading the sign

What looks good now may not truly be good, and what looks bad may not be entirely bad.

It is neither clearly dangerous nor clearly peaceful. Robbing one side to patch another still harms yourself, so keep to the old and wait.
